Silhouettes of Time is a beautiful book of short stories that will certainly grab your attention and heart. The stories had a smooth flow and were very descriptive of the characters and settings. This was a very easy book to read and I mean that in a complimentary way. Maya is a very creative writer and I definitely recommend this book to all readers.
Author Maya Mitra Das expands her catalogue of talents with her first short story collection, Silhouettes of Time. From traumatic childhood moments in a religiously divided India to race relations in America's Bible Belt and unpredictable train journeys to Darjeeling, this collection crosses time and space with ease, and the author's ability to capture the culture, pace, and environment of these different settings is remarkable. These are everyday stories of ordinary lives, but they reveal universally relatable themes—of independence, instability, family, violence, shifting beliefs, and modernization. Some stories feel torn from lived experience, while others have a touch of the surreal and mystical, such as "A Tale Before Halloween." This playful balance keeps readers on their toes, unsure of what type of story might come next—or how far they'll have to suspend their disbelief. Yes, many of the stories relate to Indian culture, history, traditions and beliefs, but the unique contexts in which these stories are couched make them accessible to readers anywhere.
Silhouettes of Time by Maya Mitra Das is a poetic and whimsical read that will take you on a magical journey. It is a short read that comprises a compilation of more than thirteen short stories that relate to time, space, and memory. Author Maya Mitra Das is a fascinating writer and I found myself reading this book in one sitting. I enjoyed that each story had a different topic then the last making this a diverse read. Maya Mitra Das is really a person of many talents. When I read the book’s foreword and learned how multi-talented the writer is, I instantly realized I was in for a treat. This has been my common observation that writers with many skills, talents, or experiences have a different kind of observation. The way such multi-talented writers observe and pen their thoughts is just different from others.
This collection of short stories is very visual and rich, with many new ways of looking at the world, almost magical. The images of India are especially vivid. A relaxing read.
Silhouettes in Time by Maya Mitra Das is a short read that is made up of several short stories. All of the stories are easy to read and understand. Each of them can be read in one sitting, making the book perfect for vacations or for sitting on a nightstand. There is a nice moral that can be learned from each of the stories, making them classics that can be used with younger readers as well. The writing style allows the reader to visualize everything that is taking place and feel that he has a connection to the characters as they go on their journeys. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a short read that they can get lost in and enjoy all the way to the end.
The author writes with her heart as if she is narrating her life while living in India and all the political problems that were there, but at the same time she is telling the history of India in those days, they are intermingled and in a way that is what makes this book an excellent collection of short stories, some of them are enlightening, others are pleasant and others are shocking but when you read them all together you end with food for thoughts; that is something I always like of a book.

Maya does a fantastic job when it comes to descriptions allowing you to feel as if you are present in the story. The characters are engaging, the storylines are well thought out and executed and each story is entertaining. I am not typically a fan of short-stories believing that there aren’t enough pages in a short-story to make for a satisfying ending, but Maya manages to do so. This collection of short stories by Maya Mitri Das ranges through history, but centres around the early-to-mid 1900s and takes a deep, human look at religious strife, racism, family legacies, class struggles, and more. The stories range from very short to long enough to divide into small chapters, but are all quick and very much easy-reading. If there’s a weakness, it’s that the dialogue can sometimes seem a little stilted, but a lot of that is likely era-appropriate, and simply comes across that way to the modern reader.
